Profile of Sir Andrew Green
Members of the Advisory Council
Migrationwatch UK is an independent think tank which has no links to any political party or organisation. It is chaired by Sir Andrew Green, a former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. We have a distinguished Advisory Council from diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds.

We entirely accept that genuine refugees should be welcomed, but nowadays those seeking asylum comprise only about 6% of foreign immigration into Britain .We also recognise that many immigrants have made a valuable contribution to our society in terms of both skills and diversity. However, our present immigrant communities are not the issue. Rather, the question now is whether we wish to see immigration add nearly six million to our population over the next 30 years, given that England is already the second most crowded country in Europe (after Holland). Our research indicates that, on current trends, we can now expect a net inflow of at least 2 million non EU citizens per decade. This is confirmed by the figures issued by the Office for National Statistics in November 2006 which showed that the number was 203,000 in 2005 – the sixth consecutive year in which net non-EU immigration was over 200,000. There must be a serious question as to whether we can successfully integrate immigrants at such a rate. The Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality warned in September 2005 that "we are sleepwalking our way to segregation". (This inflow is partially counter balanced by a net loss of British citizens amounting to 107,000 in 2005. Illegal immigrants are not included in any of these numbers.)

We are not opposed to immigration that is moderate and managed. At present it is neither. We wish to ensure that the arguments adduced in favour of the current large-scale immigration are thoroughly examined as we believe them to be unsound. We also believe that such massive immigration is contrary to the interests of all sections of our community, adding to the problems of both overcrowding and integration. We monitor developments, conduct research, and provide the public with full and accurate facts placed in their proper context. We also make recommendations for policy.

Our objective is that there should be an open and frank policy debate, based on the facts. Thereafter, decisions are a matter for the political system. We believe that the government's lack of frankness and the failure of much of the media, until recently, openly to address the substance of these matters have given rise to rumour and suspicion which can only encourage the rise of the extreme right, to which we are strongly opposed.

Unlike most organisations in this field, we receive no subsidy from the government in any form and have no intention of seeking one. As we are not a membership organisation, we rely on donations as well as on subscriptions to our papers (at a cost of £25 per year) from those who wish to support our work.
